Questions tutors ask before they sign up
The honest answers, including the ones about what the free plan doesn’t cover. If yours isn’t here, ask me and a real person replies.
About the platform
Which video calling platforms work with the classroom?
The classroom runs in a browser, so any platform that lets you share your screen will work. Tutors use it with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Skype, ClassIn, and VooV. Platforms with a built-in co-browser, such as Koala Go, RemoteHQ, and FunClass, go one better: your student can interact with the lesson directly rather than only watching your screen, which also means it works properly for a student on an iPad.
Can I use The Tutor Resource on Preply, iTalki, Cambly, Outschool, or Allschool?
Yes. You can teach with our lessons on any online platform, as long as you follow our Terms of Use and check your platform’s own policy on third-party materials. Some marketplaces restrict outside content, so the second part is worth a look before your first session.
Do I own the data I create on the platform?
Yes. Your student profiles, session feedback, placement results, and lesson history are yours. You can export your data at any time. If you close your account, your data is held for 30 days in case you change your mind, then permanently deleted on request.
How is this different from other ESL platforms?
Most platforms give you content or tools, not both. The Tutor Resource combines a purpose-built ESL curriculum with a classroom player, student tracking, placement testing, and the Tutor Tools+ add-on in one place. It was built by a working ESL tutor for independent tutors, not by a content company trying to add features.
Who built this and who runs it?
David Cole, an educator with 21 years of experience across corporate training, university instruction, and online ESL tutoring. He started building the curriculum in 2021 with a group of other teachers, and rebuilt the entire platform from scratch as something harder to copy and more useful to tutors. He still teaches, and he is the primary user of the platform.
Do you offer team or school accounts?
Yes. There are two school plans: School Premium, which shares the full lesson catalog across your team, and School Ultimate, which adds Tutor Tools+ for every seat. Both start at three seats: a supervisor plus two teachers. You can add more seats as the team grows. The supervisor account manages the team and sees reporting across their teachers, all billed from one place. See the Schools tab on the pricing page for current rates, or email hello@teacherstogetherenglish.com if you would like to talk it through first.
Is there a mobile app?
The platform is fully mobile-responsive and works well in a mobile browser. A dedicated iOS or Android app isn’t currently available. For teaching sessions, most tutors use a laptop or tablet since the classroom viewer benefits from a larger screen.
What happens to my pricing if I was an existing TTE subscriber?
Your existing pricing is grandfathered for 12 months from the migration date. You’ll receive an email with migration instructions. Your lessons, payment history, and student data carry over.
Lessons and the curriculum
Do you have lessons for my students' level and age group?
The Tutor Resource has 700+ lessons across five CEFR levels (Pre-A1 through B2), with parallel Kids, Teens, and Adults tracks. Every level is organized into themed units with several lessons in each. Whether your student is a complete beginner child or a B2 adult professional, there’s a full unit track designed specifically for them.
What’s the placement test and how does it work?
It’s a 20 to 30 minute adaptive assessment covering five skill areas: Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening, Reading, and Speaking. The test adapts as it goes, so stronger answers lead to harder questions and weaker ones route to easier questions. At the end you get a branded report with a recommended CEFR level, a skill radar, a plain-language summary you can share with a parent, and the lesson we suggest starting from. It’s included on every plan, including the free one.
What if my students use a different curriculum?
You can use The Tutor Resource with any curriculum. The lesson feedback tool lets you log sessions even when you teach your own material, so your student progress data stays in one place. Our curriculum is there when you want it. The tools work regardless of what you teach.
Can I suggest a lesson topic or request one that doesn’t exist yet?
Yes. Lesson requests are open to every plan holder from inside the platform. If your student needs a topic the library doesn’t cover, submit it and we’ll look at building it. When a requested lesson is made, it appears in the library for you automatically. Ultimate plan holders can also request bespoke lessons built to their own specification.
Can I download lessons to use offline?
The classroom viewer is browser-based and requires an internet connection during the lesson. For offline use, you can print-to-PDF directly from any lesson in your browser. Homework sheets are downloadable PDFs you can send to students before or after class.
Plans, billing and refunds
Do I need a credit card to start?
No. The free plan needs nothing but an email address, and it does not expire. You only enter card details if you decide to move to a paid plan later.
What do I get on the free plan?
The free plan covers up to 3 students and doesn’t expire. You get the classroom, session logging and progress tracking, the placement test, and the free sample lessons. The Teaching Assistant and the feedback writer are included with a monthly allowance, and Tutor Tools+ lifts that allowance and adds the homework creator. The full lesson library is paid. Whatever you have already logged stays put: your student data, feedback history, and placement reports are never deleted.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes, anytime, no questions asked, and no forms to fill out. Cancellation takes one click in your account settings. If you cancel a paid plan, you keep access until the end of the billing period you already paid for, then move back to the free tier.
What’s the refund policy?
Annual plans canceled within 7 days of purchase or renewal are eligible for a full refund. Monthly plans aren’t refunded for the current billing period, but you can cancel before the next one. For anything unusual, email hello@teacherstogetherenglish.com and David will handle it personally.
